AP Courses Offered

AP Art History
Advanced Placement Art History is a course based on the content established by the College Board. Art History is designed to provide the same benefits to secondary school students as those provided by an introductory college course in art history: an understanding and knowledge of architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within diverse historical and cultural contexts. Students examine major forms of artistic expression from the beginning of time to the present. They learn to look at works of art critically, with intelligence and sensitivity, and to analyze what they see.

AP Biology/AP Lab
AP Biology is an college level course designed for those interested in Biology. Upon successful completion of the course, the student is required to take a national advanced placement exam in biology. A successful score on the exam will enable the student to receive credit for freshman Biology at most universities. The course requires an extensive amount of outside study time compared to most courses, and the amount of work required is comparable to that in a freshman college Biology class. There is a lab fee to cover the cost of consumable materials.


AP Calculus
A college level course that studies mathematics of change. There is a major focus on differential and integral calculus. At the completion of this course, students are required to take the national AP (fee required).


AP Chemistry
The AP Chemistry course is designed to closely parallel the general chemistry course usually taken during the first year of college. Students in such a course should attain a depth of understanding of the fundamentals and reasonable competence in dealing with chemical problems. The course should contribute to the development of the students' ability to think clearly and to express their ideas orally and in writing with clarity and logic. The topics covered emphasize chemical calculations, the mathematical formulation of principles, and laboratory work. Quantitative differences appear in the number of topics treated, the time spent on the course gby the students, and the nature and variety of experiments done in the laboratory. During the final portion of the course emphasis is placed on qualitative analysis in the laboratory. Students are required to take the AP Chemistry Exam in May. There is a lab fee to cover the cost of consumable materials.


AP English IV
This course is a college-level course for academically talented students who excel in literary analysis and composition. The college prep term serves as an introduction to Advanced Placement that is offered second term. Both sections emphasize English literature, but recognized literary works from other countries are also studied. In addition to reading and discussing various types of literature, students sharpen their writing skills using specific literary works as the basis for critical analysis. This emphasis on composition, coupled with intensive vocabulary study, aids students in the effective development of writing skills. At the completion of this course, students are required to take the national AP exam at a cost of $82. A successful score on this test usually guarantees sophomore standing in English to students entering college.


AP European History
Knowledge of the way people have lived and of the way events and ideas have shaped our lives helps us understand the world of the present. As we grapple with such questions in this course, the hope is that the student will emerge with: (1) an enjoyment of -or at least satisfaction from-the learning process itself; (2) a broad knowledge of the history of Europe sufficient enough to feel prepared to take the Advanced Placement exam; (3) an appreciation of some of the political, economic, social, and intellectual cross-currents in the continent's history; (4) the acquistition of skills useful to an ongoing study of history and the social sciences; and (5) an enhanced understand, through a study of contemporary events, of the role that European nations still play in today's world. AP European History is a challenging course that is designed to be the equivalent of a freshman college course in a high school setting. It is a year-long survey of European history from the Renaissance to the present.


AP Government
The AP Government & Politics: United States course provides an analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. This course involves both the study of general concepts used to interpret U.S. politics and the analysis of specific case studies. It also requires familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that constitute U.S. political reality. While there is no single approach that an AP Government & Politics: United States course must follow, certain topics are generally covered in college courses.


AP Music Theory
Advanced Placement music theory is designed to provide a rigorous course to help students understand the concepts of musicianship skills, theory, harmony, and basic score analysis. Although the emphasis will be placed on the Common Practice period (1600-1900), music of other stylistic periods will also be studied. It is the intention of this course to provide training in many aspects of music composition and music theory. Each objective covered will be taught through the students' development of written skills, aural skills, sight-seeing skills, and keyboard skills. THe AP Music Theory test taken at the end of the course can replace a number of courses, all based on the first year of a college music curriculum and may have a number of titles (Basic Musicianship, Elementary Theory, Harmony and Dictation, Structure of Music, etc.). Each student is exprected to take the AP Music Theory exam, but the results of the exam have no bearing on the student's course grades.

AP Studio Art
Advanced Placement Studio Art is a course based on the content established by the College Board. Portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. AP Studio Art is not based on a written examination; instead, students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year. The AP program is a cooperative endeavor that helps high school student's complete college-level courses and permits colleges to evaluate, acknowledge, and encourage that accomplishment through the granting of appropriate credit and placement. There are three Studio Art course options:
  • AP Drawing Portfolio
    This portfolio is designed to address a very broad interpretation of drawing issues and media. Students will work toward the preparation of a portfolio exam in May. A portfolio should represent a personal body of work that is relfective of life experiences, not just classroom project related assignments. This fast-paced class is geared toward the serious art students and allows for a detailed and defined development of skill, experimentation, and expression.
  • AP 2-D Design Portfolio
    This portfolio is intended to address a very broad interpretaion of two-dimensional design issues. This type of design involves purposeful decision-making about how to use the elements and principles of art in an integrative way. For this portfolio, students are asked to demonstrate proficiency in 2-D design using a variety of art forms. A portfolio should represent a personal body of work that is reflectiveof life experiences, not just classroom project related assignments.
  • Ap 3-D Design Portfolio
    This portfolio is intended to address a broad interpretaion of sculptural issues in depth and space. A variety of approaches to representation, abstraction, and expression may be part of the student's portfolio. A portfolio should represent a personal body of work that is reflective of life experiences, not just classroom project related assignments.
