The Meridian High School Visual and Performing Arts Department hosted the annual Empty Bowls Dinner and Winter Extravaganza event on Monday, December 5.

The Empty Bowls dinner featured soups created by talented chefs from local restaurants accompanied by crackers, dessert and beverages for a donation of $10 which is given to L.O.V.E.’S Kitchen. In addition to the meal, guests left with a handcrafted bowl.

Student artists donated handcrafted bowls, and each guest was able to select one of the handcrafted bowls to keep as a reminder of the empty bowls this event helps to fill. The basic idea of Empty Bowls is simple - the empty bowl is a tangible symbol of hunger in our communities and around the world.

In 2015, the Empty Bowls event was able to donate $1300 to L.O.V.E.’S Kitchen which helped the Executive Director, Fannie Johnson, create an afterschool snack program for children and teenagers.

This year, MHS is pleased to report that they raised around $1100 to donate to L.O.V.E.’S Kitchen.

Following the Empty Bowls Dinner, the Meridian High School Choral Department presented the Winter Extravaganza featuring MHS Wildcat Band. The performance included special music from the Freshman Singers, Concert Choir, Advanced Women’s Choir, and the Lamplighters. The musical selections ranged in time frame from the Renaissance to present day and included multiple languages and cultures to showcase the work done by students throughout first semester.

The Meridian Public School District is extremely proud of the amazing students and instructors who put countless hours and effort into such a worthwhile and enjoyable event!
