Early Wednesday Release for 2017-2018

The Meridian Public School District is implementing an early release schedule aimed at providing professional development for teachers and staff members of the school district for the 2017-2018 school year.

“Previously our teachers spent late evenings (away) from their families planning and preparing for the school year,” said MPSD Superintendent Dr. Amy Carter. “We saw this as an opportunity to give them additional time to plan and prepare as it relates to standards.”

Students at elementary schools will release at 1:45 pm on Wednesday instead of 2:45 pm, and middle and high school students will release at 2:15 pm, rather than 3:35 pm on Wednesday as well.

“Early release has been a request of our teachers and principals for years,” Carter added. “The sessions will be carefully structured, with some professional learning based in school buildings and some conducted district-wide.”

In order to convey the upcoming changes to the community, principals met with various after-school programs and partners to discuss the change for the upcoming school year. Parents were also notified in May that the change would be coming.
